You've heard of lymph nodes, tonsils, and a spleen! Did you know they are all part of your lymphatic system? Your lymphatic system is part of your immune system, and works to keep your body healthy. It removes waste products from your body including fats and helps to fight infections.
Lymphoedema is an accumulation of fluid that causes swelling, most often seen in the arms and legs. It is caused by a disruption in the lymphatic system and is often seen when lymph nodes are removed in a person who has had surgery and/or radiation for cancer. Lymphoedema most often affects the arms and the legs, but can also be present in the head, neck, trunk or the external genitals. Find out more about Lymphoedema treatment
Lymphoedema can be serious and if not treated and managed causes severe discomfort as well as a risk of cellulitis. It can become a life long condition. Early diagnosis and treatment can detect subclinical lymphoedema which is reversible. Find out more about our Lymphoedema Prevention Programme.
Treatment for the lymphatic system is natural and non-invasive. Depending on a number of factors treatment might include an assessment with a body fluid analyser (SOZO Body Scan (BIS)), manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) or combined decongestive therapy (CDT) for lymphoedema. Each treatment will begin with an assessment, a discussion with your practitioner and an individualised treatment plan. Your practitioner will advise on the frequency and regularity of treatments.
“I have been visiting Jacqui for the last couple of years with discomfort in my hips and knees. An hour with Jacqui and she has worked her magic. On a recent visit I limped into Jacqui's place with a troubled knee, after a few quick questions she started working on my hip. While on the table she was explaining to me how all of the muscle groups work and working on an area that I would never have thought would link up to the problem in my knee. After an hour I was jogging out of the front door with all of my aches and pains alleviated. Jacqui really does know her trade and does an amazing job fixing me up when I feel broken.
“It's my privilege to have been treated by Jackie on occasions for many years.
She responds as quickly as possible to musculoskeletal problems. Her expertise and skills have resulted in a quick recovery. Jackie practices in a very holistic manner and is so easy to talk to and approachable. I go home feeling much better not only in my body but also in my mind.
The fact that she is also a very skilled and experienced Registered Nurse means that she has been able to educate as well as reassure me.
I have no hesitation in recommending her.”
“Both myself and partner were having leg/back issues, we had been down the traditional route of going to our local G.P. where we were told there was no treatment and it just comes with our age. We are in our 50's and 60's so found this advice despairing. Then we saw the Foveaux Therapeutic Massage ad in our local paper, and it said "if you are having pain, give this number a call". What a fortunate day that was! We found Jackie, the massage therapist very engaging, confident, positive and had a relaxed approach towards us. She relieved our pain gradually over several 1 hour sessions. We now only need to go back periodically. Thanks Jackie, you have given us a new lease on life
